A Single Man

A Single Man is the best film I have seen in a long time. Based on the Christopher Isherwood novel, the film stars Colin Firth as a British professor teaching at a small college in Santa Monica, CA in the early 1960s. The film looks at a single day in his life and how overcome he is by grief over the sudden death of his longtime lover, eight months earlier. Julianne Moore co-stars as his best friend and former lover.

I think the relationship between their two characters is my favorite part of the film. It's a beautiful friendship between two people who know each other better than anyone else in the world. It is when we see these two together that we get a precious glimpse into Colin Firth's character because she is the only one he allows to see his vulnerability.

The film overall is so visually breathtaking. Directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, there's an irresistible 1960s glamor about the whole movie.

Colin Firth rightly received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Lead Role. His performance was so brilliant and understated. I just couldn't take my eyes off him. The depth of emotion he can convey with one look or a slight wince is heart-breakingly beautiful. If you want to watch something life-affirming and thought-provoking this weekend, definitely check out A Single Man.
