Night Out @ Forbidden Island

Night Out @ Forbidden Island

Don't be fooled by the kitschy island decor at Alameda's Forbidden Island tiki bar. Their cocktails mean business. The extensive menu features everything from the classic Mai Tai to the signature Forbidden Island house special.  My new favorite cocktail: the Chambrolada, a punchy piña colada with black raspberry Chambord, served in a 20-ounce goblet. The pineapple and honey Boo Loo and the passion fruit Tropical Itch (served with a souvenir back scratcher) are also pretty tasty. On my to-try list for next time: The Planet of the Apes (bananas, coconut, cream and silver rum) and the potent Painkiller (rum, pineapple, orange and coconut with a hint of spice).

Insider tip: You might notice a display case featuring an eclectic collection of tiki mugs. Those aren't for sale. Become a regular at this place and the owners might just let you store your personal mug in the display case to use every time you stop by.
