Chicago Eats

Chicago Eats

Just got back this weekend from a whirlwind (literally) four-day trip to Chicago. There, my friend Ania showed me everything in the Windy City from the 110-story Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and Navy Pier to Millennium Park and the famous Bean. One of my favorite parts of the trip, or any trip for that matter, was sampling all the local food the city had to offer. While the city itself has a lot of touristy eateries, I also found that my two favorite food joints were actually tucked away in the suburbs.

If you're ever in the Chicagoland area, here are some awesome places you must try.

Johnnie's Beef- Elmwood Park

This place is a local legend. Located in the Chicago suburb of Elmwood Park, this sandwich eatery is what I like to think of as a walk-through diner-- or a food truck without wheels, if you will. On any given day, I'm told that there's always a steady line of hungry locals wrapped around the building. I assure you, though, it's well worth the wait. Once inside, you're faced with an assembly line of blue-capped grilling maestros who will speedily serve you the best Italian beef sandwich you've ever tasted.

The line wraps around the block, but it's worth it.

The perfect combo of Italian beef, peppers and spices.

For less than $4, you get a handful of tender Italian beef with peppers and jalapenos stuffed into a roll. As someone, who is rather picky about eating beef, I now stand as a believer of Johnnie's. The things that usually stop me from eating slabs of beef like toughness and slimy fat are absent from a Johnnie's sandwich. All I can say is, go here!!! And pick up a refreshing side of lemon Italian ice while you're at it.

Hala Kahiki- River Grove

After a long day of sightseeing, this tiki bar is the perfect place to kick back and unwind over something fruity and potent. My recommendation is the famous Volcano, available to share in portions for two or up to six. The rum-based treat is served in a cute bowl, with a raised smoking volcano in the middle. Sip leisurely through long straws and enjoy for only $13.50 (the two-person portion). Unfortunately, I don't have a picture and I don't want to steal anyone else's. But you can see what it looks like

Gold Coast Dogs, Inc.- Chicago

This family-owned chain based in Chicago had a booth at the annual Taste of Chicago food fest, where I got to sample their famous Chicago style hot dog.

Here's a fun fact for all of us who aren't native Chicagoans: Never ask for ketchup for your hot dog in Chicago. It compromises the quality of the meat. Ask for ketchup and you'll be marked as a tourist.

A true Chicago style hot dog has yellow mustard, relish, chopped onions, peppers and a pickle.

A Gold Coast hot dog.
