Tomorrow is the 55th anniversary of
Rosa Parks' famous stand (or sit) against racism. When the then 42-year-old Rosa Parks (a black woman) boarded a
Montgomery, Ala. bus and refused to give up her seat to a white man, she helped fire up a revolution that was already many years in the making. Her refusal to give up her seat and her subsequent arrest sparked the
Montgomery Bus Boycott. Black people and all others who supported
civil rights were tired of the systemic racial segregation laws in place at the time. They rallied together to boycott the Montgomery bus system-- a boycott that lasted over a year and ultimately ended in victory when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled racially segregated bus laws unconstitutional. Her incredible courage and the courage of all those involved in the civil rights movement helped secure greater rights for generations to come. To Rosa Parks and those who stood by her, thank you.
