A Singleton's Guide to Keeping Your Sanity on V-Day

Here's a little early Valentine's present from me to all of you.

It's that time of year. Spring is in the air and Valentine's Day is literally around the corner. Couples. Couples everywhere. It's like Noah's Ark-- everyone comes in pairs. Even though I don't have a Valentine this year, I'll go ahead and admit that I love Valentine's Day!

I know this goes against every singleton's V-Day rule. Everyone knows that if you don't have a Valentine, you're supposed to spend Cupid's day being a big grump and moaning about how Valentine's Day isn't even a real holiday, how it's just a commercial ploy to get people to buy superficial tokens of affection, etc. I say: Down with the haters. How can anyone hate on the holiday dedicated to love? Even if you don't have a Valentine, I think you should think about the people and things you love in your life.

I love couples wandering down the street hand-in-hand. I love starry-eyed lovers walking home with a bouquet of fresh flowers for their beloved. I love the cute little puppy dog cards and the teddy bears holding heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. I love the idea of people finally getting the courage to admit their feelings to their secret crush. I love people being nice to the ones they love.

If you still can't stand all the gushiness, that's fine. I get it. You don't have to like Valentine's Day. So here are a five things you can do to get through the day without raining on anyone else's parade:

1) Gather some friends, grab a pound of half-priced chocolates and pop in a good DVD. For all the ladies out there, I recommend: An Affair to Remember, Casablanca, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, etc. Basically pick any good movie that will make you laugh or cry. [I guess you could do this even if you have a date!]

2) Cook yourself a yummy dinner. You could go for the good comfort-food basics like mac n' cheese, spaghetti and meatballs or fried chicken. You could also go for a gourmet (and slightly healthier) option like thin crust teriyaki chicken pizza, pad thai noodles, or spinach and ricotta tortellini.

3) Go out to a club. Grab a single friend or two, or just go by yourself. When you're in a crowd of people ready to party, coming alone isn't that big of a deal. Be glad it's not 1930 when you needed a partner to dance. Who knows, you might even meet someone there!

4) Spread the true meaning of love and volunteer at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter. Perhaps you might help out in a fundraiser for a charitable event. In any case, you'll be helping a lot of people and you'll feel mighty good about yourself afterward.

Whatever you decide to do, I hope you have a great Valentine's Day!
