I was riding the bus yesterday and I happened to sit next to this old Chinese lady. She had a lumpy floral knapsack strapped to her back and she was sitting on the edge of her seat. I began to wonder what was so heavy in her bag. Suddenly, out of the bag pops out the head of a two year-old girl with a little mushroom cut. She looked around the bus shyly with her big, brown doe eyes. Then, still strapped into her carrier, she stuck out her little legs and stood up on the seat. She began to shift her weight on each leg, which caused her yellow ducky sandals to squeak. Apparently, I wasn't the only rider on the bus to notice and pretty soon several of us found ourselves smiling at the little girl. Noticing all of the new attention, she suddenly got very shy and retreated into her papoose.
It was really very cute. You don't see enough babies in papooses (what's the plural of papoose? papoosi?).
