It's here. I switched on the tv today, flipped through a few channels and stopped at VH1. I couldn't believe it. They were showing video clips of Gladiator, Jackass, and the 2000 presidential elections. The day has come. VH1'sI Love the New Millennium has arrived. It's the latest installment in a series of shows recapping trends, movies, and events of specific years.
Of course, there have been the popular forerunners such as I Love the 70s, I Love the 80s, and I Love the 90s. But I didn't think the day would come so soon when I could watch one of those shows and actually relate to what they were talking about.
Sure the 70s, 80s, and even early 90s themed episodes have always been fun to watch. I recognize the "retro" trends and historical events they were talking about. But I've always felt myself separated from those things. They were simply funny occurrences of the past that I couldn't really relate to.
But now with new segments on Cast Away, Erin Brokovich, and TiVo I can't ignore the fact that I distinctly remember when those things first came out. I couldn't resist the urge to blurt out loud, "Wow. That came out that long ago? It seemed like it was just yesterday..."
I'm starting to understand what my parents must feel. Watching your entire cultural generation summed up and poked fun at in one tv show is an odd feeling. But then again, it's also kind of fun being able to watch the show and say, "Oh yeah! I remember that!" It's enough to make a girl nostalgic.
