Quarantine Life: Day 3, Spring Fever

Today is the first day of spring and it’s also the first sunny day we’ve had in a while. After being cooped up for days, we were anxious to take a short lunch break to walk around the neighborhood. A lot of our neighbors had the same idea. We headed to the looped walking trail in our neighborhood, but found that several people were already there. Everyone was trying to maintain their distance, per CDC guidelines to stay at least six feet away from others. Rather than spending our walk trying to make sure we avoided people and hoping they wouldn’t sneeze upwind of us, we decided to come back another time when it might be less crowded and more enjoyable.

I’ll admit I was disappointed and a little frustrated. Today is Day 3 of our mandatory shut-in, but we’ve been self-isolating for the past six days. Six days of gloomy skies and not going out were starting to take a toll on me. I had hoped that today’s good weather would mark a turn for the better, at least in terms of allowing us to get outside. I dreamed of fresh air and the chance to stretch my legs. I also wanted to make a short video of our walk that we could share on the blog.

Grant noticed how disappointed I was after we had to postpone our outing. He said that when we got home and back to work that I was “typing really hard.” Sorry, keyboard. I put on my headphones and blasted music as I worked. Grant disappeared into the other room. He came back smiling a few minutes later and told me he had a blog post idea for today. I asked him what he had in mind, but he said that he would wait to tell me later. I put my headphones back on and continued to work.

About 20 minutes later, he tapped me on the shoulder and told me there was something at the front door for me. I opened the door and found a delivery bag with two burritos, a bag of chips and two sides of salsa in it. Grant had ordered me food from one of our favorite places, Dos Coyotes, and it was delivered by Door Dash.

The shrimp burrito from Dos Coyotes.

He said that he felt bad seeing me so sad and he knew a couple of burritos (one for today and one for tomorrow) would cheer me up. He was right. We’d also discussed over the past few days how important it is to support local businesses during these difficult times. We’re happy to do what we can to order from our local restaurants.

I was going to say that it’s amazing how much a burrito can turn a bad day into a good one, but it wasn’t just the meal that made me feel better. It was Grant. It was his thoughtfulness and quick thinking that placated his “hangry” wife. I’m a lucky girl.

Getting sun and a burrito. It’s a good day.

This daily blog post series is our way of sharing our experience with you, our readers. We’ll talk about our daily routines, adjustments to working from home, recipes based on limited ingredients and any other topic that comes to mind. It’s our way of connecting with the “outside” world, while also giving us the opportunity to look within and reflect on what we’re experiencing and how we’re feeling. Thanks for your interest in sharing this journey with us. Stay tuned and be well.
